Besides my academic accomplishments, my biggest hobby is costuming. I have learned how to sew in order to construct costumes to wear at events and conventions. Simply by being somewhere in costume, I bring so much joy and happiness to children, people who are affected by disabilities, and more. I go to events up and down the East Coast as various characters. My most proliferate and notable character is Harley Quinn.
My favorite event, by far, is Wonder Woman Day.
WWD is an original art auction completed every year to raise funds for womens' shelters. There is one in Flemington, New Jersey that raises money for SAFE in Hunterdon, which is the one I participate in. A full year goes into preparing for WWD, between garnering donations from artists to publicizing, getting the word out, to the final month of bidding and auctioning, to the final days of the auction. The weekend is summed up in two days: Superhero Day and Wonder Woman Day.
It doesn't seem like much, but being in costume on those days brings so much publicity, interest and excitement to the event. People who take pictures with us donate to the cause, and this year, overall, we raised over $16,000! It's an amazing day, an amazing event and a wonderful cause. I am so proud to be a part of this event.
